Small groups – Lent

February 19, 2018

During Lent this year, our Thursday evening small group, which meets at the Vicarage, is following a Lent course from 40acts.

40acts is the generosity challenge for Lent, created by UK Christian charity, Stewardship. For seven years, 40acts has asked a question: what if Lent could be about more than just giving stuff up? What if it could be a time of radical generosity as well as spiritual discipline?

Over the years, 40acts has become a movement of over 100,000 people on a mission to impact their communities with generosity – during Lent and beyond.

You can find the study guide here – join us for the discussion at the Vicarage on Thursdays at 7:30pm 🙂

The persecuted church

February 7, 2018

Tomorrow – February 8th – at the vicarage our Thursday evening group is having a special session looking about the persecuted church, how we can pray from them and what we can learn from their faith. Come along at 7.30pm to find out more.

We are focusing in particular on the work of Open Doors UK and hearing from a pastor in Syria describing life in that country.

Prayer Party – report

January 17, 2018

On the second Thursday of each month, instead of the Vicarage small group, we gather at the church for a ‘prayer party’ … we share a meal together, and then spend time in prayer and praise.

Each month someone organises a simple meal for 6pm, and we aim to gather for prayer from 7pm, though it’s often a little later, since we enjoy our time together as we eat 🙂 This year our times of prayer will be focused on praying for revival, in our church and local community, in response to our verse of the year:

Unless the Lord builds the house,
it’s builders labour in vain.
Psalm 127:1

As we began our time of prayer this month, Revd Tim shared a few thoughts with us, saying how prayer begins with God and focuses on him throughout – his purpose, his character, his acts – and asked us to remember the 5 Cs …

Commit – decide to meet regularly to pray for the growth of the church

Connect – and pray for the wider community

Concentrate – on five people you want to find faith in Jesus

Communicate – be ready to share stories of what the Lord has done in your life, and in answer to prayer

Cover – all our worship, our Sunday services, small groups and other activities in prayer

He then shared four things to pray, each based on a verse from the Bible …

~for hearts that are ready to receive and obey God’s word (Luke 8:11-15)
~for eyes to be opened to the reality of Jesus (2 Corinthians 4:4)
~for ears to hear the word of God (Matthew 16:16)
~for mouths to confess Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9)

We then spent some time in prayer and worship, each suggesting a song or reading a Bible passage as we thought appropriate … a very special time of fellowship together in God’s presence.

Our next Prayer Party will be on Thursday, February 8th, 6pm for food, 7pm for prayer … everyone is welcome, whether you are a member of a small group or not … come and join us as we share fellowship over a meal and pray for God to challenge and change our church and community through Christ.

Let’s start the year in prayer!

Jacket potato

On Thursday January 11th we are having another praise party at St Michael’s.

Jacket potatoes and cheese will be provided from 6pm  but please bring along other toppings and salad to share!

We will move into a time of prayer and praise from 7pm.

What would happen if month by month the whole church gathered to pray for the Lord to move in power among us and through us?

Turn up on Thursday evening and let’s find out!
