About

Welcome to the website of the churches of
St Michael & St Barnabas, Devonport.

On January 1st 2017, our two parishes became one united parish. This process began early in 2016, and on the whole it has been a very positive change so we are excited about the future ūüôā

So our Sunday services now take place at St Michael’s, 10:30am each Sunday.¬†

Regular activities continue at St Barnabas as usual, and it is still available for letting – use the contact page to find out more.

Our services are fairly informal, with a mixture of traditional and modern worship. See below for our usual pattern of services, but changes will be made to accommodate festivals and other celebrations such as Baptism …

Children

We have Junior Church for children of primary school age. We include children and young people as equal members of our churches, and encourage them to take a full part in our worship and life together as a church family. For younger children, there are play bags available at the front of church if they need occupying!

Our priorities as a church

We define ourselves as evangelical churches. We understand this to mean:

  • We are centred on the Bible as the living word of God
  • We believe Jesus is the only sure way to God
  • We believe Jesus paid for our sins on the cross
  • We believe in work of the Holy Spirit in our lives
  • We have a faith which needs to be shared personally

To see how our faith shapes our life as a church, please see our MAP (Mission Action Plan) for more details.

Occasional Services

Baptisms will usually take place within All-Age or Informal Worship. It is our policy only to offer baptism after preparation, and we encourage all those who are thinking about baptism to join us regularly at worship. We also offer services of thanksgiving for those who do not feel able to make the promises involved in baptism.

St Michael’s is available for¬†weddings¬†and we also offer services of thanksgiving for those who wish to affirm their vows after a civil service, or who wish to celebrate the anniversary of their marriage.

If you are getting married at another church, but live in our parish, please contact us about having your banns read. These need to be read within three months of the wedding, on three consecutive Sundays, and hopefully we can make them one less thing to worry about!

If you suffer from a bereavement, then you may like to know we conduct funerals or memorial services to celebrate the life of a loved one. Unlike a funeral at a crematorium, the service is not restricted to a set length, and can help to give the time and space needed at such a difficult occasion .

Please do contact us if we can help in any way with any of these services.
