Day 32: James 4:11

Day 32Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. (James 4:11).

Slander is a very powerful, emotive word and it’s easy to think that James’ warning does not apply to us. But there are times when all of us – whether intentionally or not – bear false witness against our neighbour: maybe in a joke, maybe in a passing comment. But James wants us to realise that the law does not grade sin. All sin is serious and the law still applies to us, whatever we choose to call the actual offence.

Today ask the Holy Spirit to help you speak truthfully and fairly about other people.

If you want to reflect further, consider Jesus’ words about how to treat others in Matthew 5:21-26.
