Paul is teaching here about what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit. For Paul, the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives is not to be found primarily in our experiences or our worship, but rather in the quality of our relationships. That’s why he goes on from this verse to talk about our marriages, our homes and our workplaces. For him there really is no division between our spiritual and our secular lives.
This weekend is Mothering Sunday, a joyful time for some, a difficult time for others. Ask the Lord to show you how to serve anyone who might be feeling particularly lonely.
If you want to reflect further, consider Paul’s teaching about relationships in Eph 5:22-6:9.
