All over the country churches are beginning to grow. New churches and fresh expressions of church are springing up country-wide. Churches are coming together in new ways. The spiritual climate in the UK is changing. Hearts are open to receive the hope Jesus gives. Roy Crowne, HOPE’s Executive Director, says: ‘Let’s embrace the moment – the time is now. Imagine what can happen in 2014 as churches across the country pray and act together. We are stronger together than apart. Yes, we’ve got to demonstrate the love of God, but we are also committed to telling the story of what Jesus Christ has done and our own faith story.’ (hopetogether.org.uk)
2014 is a year of mission – the whole church, reaching the whole nation, for a whole year. At the launch of Hope 2014, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, set out a vision for a confident and vibrant Church 50 years on from HOPE 2014. The 100 leaders of denominations and Christian ministries who had gathered to launch HOPE 2014, also heard from Roy Crowne, HOPE’s Executive Director; Pastor Agu Irukwu of the Redeemed Christian Church of God; and Dr Rachel Jordan, National Advisor for Mission and Evangelism for the Church of England who introduced Leanne Jones, a member of the Sion Catholic Community for Evangelism, who described how Hope08 had sparked her journey to faith.
St Michael’s and St Barnabas are, together with Devonport Baptist and Morice Town Salvation Army, planning a week of special events, supported by a team from Through Faith Missions. The team, led by Roger Murphy, will be with us from 31st May – 8th June. Members of the team will be at all our regular activities, and there will also be joint church events, including a BBQ. The timetable is not yet finalised, so if you have any ideas or suggestions, please do let us know!
There will also be a preparation weekend, February 8th – 9th … so keep those dates free in your diary. A number of the team will be with us to talk through our involvement and ideas, and to join with us in worship on Sunday.
We can all get involved … and we can begin now by praying … please pray for Hope 2014 (there are ideas for prayer on the website, just click on the link and look for the prayer tab), and for our own week of activities. And watch this space for news and invitations … it’s an exciting time in the life of our churches, so don’t miss out!
