This week we come to Bulgaria – a former Communist country now part of the EU but still facing issues of corruption and organised crime. Pray for those Bulgarians who travel abroad to find work, for the renewal of dominant Orthodox church, and for effective outreach to the Muslim minority in the country.
Orthodoxy was the state religion until 1945. The Communists persecuted Christians and manipulated denominational leadership until 1989. The constitution proclaims religious freedom for all, but makes the status of the Orthodox Church one of ambiguous primacy, further reinforced between 1994 and 1997. Since then, the government has promised to end all existing religious discrimination. (Pray Europe)
