This week we come to Brazil, a vast country that borders every other country in South America except Chile and Ecuador, and now one of the top 10 economies in the world. As we begin to focus on the World Cup and Olympics, pray for the church, thanking God for its rapid growth, but also asking that the gospel might touch issues such as inequality, the environment, corruption and many others.
Of the 200 million people in the nation, 40 million Brazilians live below the poverty line. While the richest 10% of Brazilians garner nearly half the income of Brazil, the poorest 10% get less than 1%. In Rio de Janeiro, where “Christ the Redeemer”overlooks the city, 20-25% of the population lives in slums.
• Pray for the glory of the Lord captured in the statue of “Christ the Redeemer” to be captured in the hearts and minds of the Brazilian people.
• Pray for the splendour of God’s creation found in the Amazon basin to be protected from those seeking to despoil and destroy it out of greed and selfish ambition.
• Pray that where the gospel is being mixed with spiritist beliefs, the Holy Spirit would bring a spirit of truth and a purging of unbiblical belief.
